The Long Trajectory
a haiku cycle
Space is vast and dark
humans are small and fragile
ship is my cocoon
A thin steel bubble
speeding through the emptiness
keeps me warm and safe
Fans and motors hum
The noise, like air, comforts me
Outside is silence
Only one part fails
of ten million in the ship
They're all critical
Carbon dioxide
a natural part of air
CO2 is sleep
Systems all shut down
A quiet descends like night
Soon all will be still.
